Why is there still too little innovation or attention when it comes to people with disabilities?
This wasn’t the initial question I got when I started this project, but one that frequently came to mind when continuing it. Instead of coming up with a solution for the ANWB to garner new members for an obvious group, my team decided to take up a challenge and design for the disabled.
By combining elements from frequently used platforms like 9292 and Google Maps and translating these to work well with disabilities, concept “van A naar B” was created. An app which holds disabilitiesof the user in account to calculate route and transfer times would make for travel with less frustration. Next to calculating custom travel times, the app would also be able to show the user any services like toilets, elevators, or broadened gates for easy wheelchair accessibility.
After a kill-your-darling however, we decided the concept to not be challenging enoughand decided to combine the concept with another. Ultimately the combination ledto the creation of “rent-able”, an autonomous wheelchair accessible vehiclebased on MAAS. The vehicle would be orderable via an ANWB app on the phone afterwhich the rent-able would ride from its station to the user. Once arrived theuser may enter the vehicle with their wheelchair and will be greeted by adisplay. The user may then select either the fastest route or a scenic route(which would be used by tourists or on a day off). Underneath the designed display that would be found in the vehicle can be seen.
